My Invisible Friend is Better Than Yours!
Why is Scientology so terrified of criticism or satire? As long as you don’t draw cartoons of their prophet even the Muslims are more open to discussion about their religion. I think anybody that sensitive to open debate is probably fairly insecure — and I guess if my religion had as a central, but secret, tenet the concept that an alien ruler of the "Galactic Confederacy" brought billions of people to earth, 75 billion years ago, stacked them up in volcanoes and blew them up with hydrogen bombs then I’d be pretty insecure too.
Blackbeard is in Trouble
DUBAI, United Arab Emirates (AP) — Two U.S. Navy ships exchanged gunfire with suspected pirates Saturday off the coast of Somalia, and one suspect was killed and five others were wounded, the navy said.
I guess if you’re about to be boarded you don’t have a lot of choices, but it seems like firing on a pair of U.S. Navy ships would be pretty far down the list of options. I’m not sure what the upside is there — you’re not going to sink a Guided Missile Destroyer with small arms and even if you manage to hit one or two of the American sailors you’re simply guaranteed to anger the rest of them.
This Just In!
Brad and Angelina…still not married. In a related story it appears that Cameron Diaz is still not pregnant. Why either of those items is news is sort of discouraging.
This One’s For Marshall…
A legally blind musher has successfully completed the Iditarod which my dog describes as "The Super Bowl for dogs." Pretty neat that somebody with 20-200 vision can pull off that feat; I’ve got pretty good vision and I wouldn’t want to dog sled for more than a few minutes.
Me and Sparkletts Water Makin’ Arrests
The latest dumb criminal story surrounds a fugitive in South Carolina who came out of hiding to get a drink of water. And was promptly arrested. On a more serious note it’s good to note that although the fugitive had a gun on him he surrendered without a fight.
The Things Fear Does
I was going to post something questioning the Administration’s stance on warrantless wiretaps but as we are continually reminded by conservatives, questioning anything the President does gives comfort to our enemies so I guess I won’t reiterate that FISA allows for the Attorney General to authorize emergency wiretaps of suspected terrorists without getting a warrant first as long as the warrant is applied for within 72 hours. This would completely destroy the conservatives argument that the President had to go around the FISA court because warrants for wiretaps take too long to get. I won’t say anything like that, however, because I don’t want to give comfort to our enemies. But you can read the law for yourself – don’t take my word for it.
